A Meissen 'Months of the Year' mug, circa 1745
Painted with a winter scene depicting a horse-drawn sled and distant skaters in a frozen landscape, titled 'Januarius' in iron-red, enclosed by a brown-edged gilt foliate scrollwork flanked by vignettes depicting Callot dwarves, ice-skating and sitting by a fire, the handle with a band of purple strapwork, the rim with a gilt border of trellis panels enclosed by foliate scrollwork, 7.7cm high, faint crossed swords mark in blue, impressed 24

  • Only two other examples of the 'January' mug are recorded: in the Rijksmuseum and in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg (the former is illustrated by A.L. den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum (2000), no. 231, along with the other eleven months of the set. This form of small mug was called a "Wermuthkrügel" (vermouth mug) in the orders for the Swan Service.
