1860 $20
Lot 1217
1860 $20
A total of just 577,670 coins were minted for circulation. This is a particularly important occasion, since the 1860 twenty dollar is anything but common in Mint State condition. The coin is a fully brilliant example with vivid (and frosty) green-gold luster throughout, with a few trace wisps of deep red color and a few scattered toning spots on the obverse. The often abundant abrasions found on Mint State Type One double eagles are virtually nonexistent, and the strike is nearly full. With the massive gold discoveries in California, erection and operation of the San Francisco Mint (1854) meant that less gold had to be transported to Philadelphia, thus lower mintages resulted. (PCGS 8929)
US$ 6,000 - 8,000
£3,800 - 5,100
