A large lacquer circular box and cover with painted and woven decoration
17th/18th century
The flat top to the cover painted in shades of red, green and pale yellow lacquer with a peacock and pheasant, flowering plants and rocks on a black lacquer ground, the curving walls covered with a band of checker and twine weave basketry that repeats on the outside walls of the box, both edges of which are trimmed with flower heads and scrolling tendrils in colored lacquer on the black lacquer ground that extends onto the underside and interior of both sections.
