Black Matrix Opal Carving of a Duck
By Gerd Moser
Idar-Oberstein, Germany

An exceptional carving formed of a single piece of rare natural black matrix opal from Andamooka, Australia. The natural variations in the opal and the placement of the inherent veining in the matrix are what make this such a virtuoso piece: the breast is grey opal, the back and tail feathers make use of the vivid green play-of-color within the opal material. The eyes are set with orange fire opal, the beak honey opal, the feet are formed of gold vermeil. The duck stands upon a base of natural barite with pyrite. Length 8in
