The European Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis can also be found in northern Africa and much of Asia. Its habitat is fresh water, especially where the water is calm and slow moving, and where tall riverbanks provide nesting sites. The present very fine carving depicting a Kingfisher utilizes labradorite to suggest the vivid blue back and tail feathers, and red eosite to render the breast. In his beak which is carved of a blue tiger's eye quartz, known as "hawk's eye" he clutches a brown translucent agate carved fish. His gold vermeil feet perch atop a specimen of rock crystal quartz.
