EINSTEIN, ALBERT. 1879-1955.
Autograph Quotation Signed ("Albert Einstein"), 1 line, n.p., 1931, reading in full: "Bildung ist innere Befreiung," on 83 x 145 mm card, matted and framed with plaques and portrait to 14 x 16 inches. Slight mat toning, generally fine.
"BILDUNG IST INNERE BEFREIUNG": EDUCATION IS INNER LIBERATION. Succinct and inspirational quotation from Einstein on the importance of education. Autograph Einstein quotations are rare on the market. Most that are on record date from the early 1930s and were made for charitable purposes, as presumably is the case for this quotation although the original recipient is not recorded. Einstein spent 1931 between Pasadena, Oxford and London, and his vacation home in Caputh, Germany. In May of 1931 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Oxford University. It was a time when he was first becoming outspoken for pacifism and against Hitler.
