VAN DER AA, PIETER. 1659-1733.
Nova Delineatio Totius Orbis Terrarum. [Leiden: Van Der Aa, 1703.] Hand-colored engraved double-hemisphere world map, 318 x 369 mm. Matted.
Originally published in 1660 by Jacob Van Meurs, and re-issued here by Van Der Aa, this map is based upon Arnold Colom's map from the first world maritime atlas. The map is surrounded by female allegories of the four elements and the gods Apollo and Diana representing day and night. California is shown as an island; the Great Lakes are beginning to appear. Coastlines for the American northwest, New Zealand and Australia all remain vague. Shirley 417.
