Obviously inspired by Maurice Sendak's modern classic Where the Wild Things Are (1963), Bedtime! too explores a little boy's fantasy life before he goes to sleep one night. The story went through at least two earlier stages ("One Day a Little Boy Went to the Moon" and "A Castle in the Middle of the Sea") before the artist devised the final plot for his picture book. "One Day a Little Boy Went to the Moon" was based on an old Venetian rhyme; and "A Castle in the Middle of the Sea" was a far more elaborate tale than the final stream-lined narrative of Bedtime! Each booklet is filled with lively pencil sketches.
