RARE CHILDREN'S BOOK by the great modern Russian poet. When he was financially strapped, Mandelshtam turned to writing for young readers. He resented the severe restrictions of the Soviet children's book authorities and produced only four volumes of juvenile verse. He capitulated to their ideological demands when he composed 2 tramvaya, the story of two streetcars, Klik and Tram, on their daily rounds. It is the only picture book illustrated by the important Russian color theorist Boris Ender in an appropriately Constructivist style reminiscent of Vera Ermolaeva's work.
