Here a little boy visits farmers, soldiers, physicians, librarians, mechanics, cooks, laundresses and other noble laborers before heading to the Kremlin to talk with Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin, Chairman of the Central Executive Committee and the nominal head of state of the USSR. Although a member of Stalin's inner circle, Kalinin had little political influence by the 1930s and adroitly survived the Great Purge of 1937. His wife was arrested, tortured and sent to a prison camp; she was released shortly before he died of cancer.
