The present work depicts the artist's youngest daughter, Mary Content Chase (1904-1943). The painting was illustrated in its day with a quote by William Wordsworth: "Her eyes as stars of twilight fair, Like twilights too her dusky hair, / But all things else about her drawn From May-time and the cheerful dawn."
