"Ivory beads were manufactured in pre-European Hawaii, but their manufacture was greatly stimulated by introduced European drills and cutting instruments. This necklace (in Rose's publication) combines four faceted beads drilled with metal tools, 16 trade beads, and a walrus ivory pendant that has the traditional rectangular perforation. Necklaces with trade beads were prized by early 19th century chiefly women who had the means to obtain them."
