A Venetian or Dalmatian schiavona
Straight 36 1/2 inch double edged blade of oval section; 8 inch fuller incised with border, a series of letters and various sickle-shaped marks; grooved ricasso with maker's mark on either side and retaining rare leather scabbard cover, the front decorated with a cut-out leather strapwork on a red cloth ground. Steel baskethilt of Oakeshott's Type 2b, the front surmounted by a trellis of three chevroned rows, the reverse with a five charcter marking in Cyrillic, possibly the name of the hiltmaker; quillon inclined to one side. Grip with ribbed leather covering. Brass cat's head pommel. Complete with original black leather scabbard, the lower half enclosed by an iron framework.
Condition: Blade with mottled patina showing areas of light pitting. Hilt with smooth, dark patina. Scabbard with minor scuffing and glued repair seven inches from tip, the iron framework with some losses.
