VERY RARE REVOLUTIONARY WAR CONTENT ALS BY JOSEPH WARREN, GREAT PATRIOT AND THE FIRST OFFICER KILLED IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION; written in apparent haste and just six weeks before Warren was cut down at the Battle of Bunker Hill. In full: "Gentlemen, the Bearer hereof is sent on Express from Albany with the Letter for the Committee of Correspondence you you [sic] will be kind enough to give him all the Assistance in your Power in obtaining Intelligence relating to our Public Affairs. I am most respectfully your...."
Dr. Joseph Warren was one of the most effective of Boston radicals. It was he who formed, with Samuel Adams, the Massachusetts Committee of Correspondence in 1772. He was also the one to dispatch Paul Revere and William Dawes on their famous midnight ride based on information he obtained from a highly placed spy (whose identity has never been discovered though thought perhaps to be General Gage's wife). Warren fought in the Battles of Lexington and Concord and just before the Battle of Bunker Hill he was appointed a Major General. However, he volunteered as a private and asked to be placed in the thick of the fighting. He was recognized, shot and mutilated towards the end of the battle. His brothers and Paul Revere, however, identified and recovered his body some months later.
