With hand-colored engraved frontispiece, 48 engraved plates (24 hand-colored, each with an uncolored key plate), 8 large vignette headpieces. Quarter morocco over marbled boards to style, raised bands, spine elaborately gilt in panels. Old dampstain extending from gutters of pp 59-78 with faint effect to plates 15-17, light toning to a few other plates, upper margin shaved with loss to plate numbers of 5 pairs of plates as well as to several plate marks, still a bright, excellent copy.
FIRST EDITION. Featuring a fine series of plates by and after Rösel depicting the anatomy, growth stages, reproductive cycles, and habitats of frogs. "One of the classics of amphibiology ... altogether a very valuable, early contribution to the literature of batrachia" (Wood p 541). Nissen ZBI 3464.
