4 volumes plus atlas. 8vo (195 x 123 mm) and folio (421 x 292 mm). [4], lxviii, 368; [4], 414; 316, [148]; [4], 328 pp. Atlas with engraved allegorical title, portrait frontispiece, and 69 maps, plans, and views (numerous double-page or folding). Text volumes in contemporary calf, spines gilt, atlas in contemporary calf backed boards. Atlas overall in very good condition with reinforcement and repairs to verso and margins of numerous plates, a few plates shaved with partial loss to captions in two or three plates, occasional light soiling or spotting and a few tears at folds, scattered light foxing to text, vol 1 shaken, some rubbing to boards, 2 spine labels missing.

Second edition, published a year after the first, of "one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America" (Hill). In addition to being the first foreign visitor to arrive in California after its founding in 1769, La Pérouse paid visits to Easter Island, Hawaii, Macao, Formosa, the Aleutian Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Australia. In 1788, the expedition departed from Botany Bay and was never heard from again. Hill 973 (without atlas); Howes M93; Pilling 2199a; Sabin 38960; Zamorano 80 49 (first ed).
