PTOLEMAEUS, CLAUDIUS, and MARTIN WALDSEEMÜLLER.
Decima Asie Tabula. [Strassburg: J. Schott, 1513.]
Hand-colored woodcut map, 460 x 617 mm, five early manuscript names inserted (from Strabo), small paper flaw near the montes orudir.
Waldeesmüller's map of India and part of Sri Lanka, with the country extending north into the Himalayas and inner Asia, and spanning between the Indus and Ganges rivers. Sri Lanka is also placed off of the west coast, rather than the east. Waldeesmüller's editions of Ptolemy (1513 and 1520), are often referred to as the "first modern atlas," because of the large number of maps he added to the existing Ptolemaic body of work.
