Hand-colored folding lithographed map, 565 x 518 mm, folded into original embossed roan covers with gilt-lettered cover label and text booklet: Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with Regions Adjoining, 38, [8 ad] pp. Map with short stub tear and neatly strengthened at folds on verso, booklet shaved just touching letters on 2 leaves, small old repair to head of binding.

FIRST PRINTING OF A LANDMARK EARLY EMIGRANT GUIDE TO CALIFORNIA AND OREGON complete with accompanying descriptive text. Texas is shown in great detail with the Rio Grande as its southern border. "This map represents a great step forward, in that it is among the first by a commercial cartographer to utilize the recent explorations that had bounded and determined the nature of the Great Basin" (Wheat Transmississippi 520).
