DUNHILL-NAMIKI: Birds & Blossoms Maki-e Mechanical Pencil, c.1930s
Black lacquer mechanical pencil (4 & 7/8"), marked "Dunhill Fabrique au Japon". Maki-e design of two birds, perhaps quails, perched in a flowering tree. Signed by Shohmi (see LarQuemin's The Four Seasons of Namiki, p. 199). Maki-e work in generally excellent condition, a few small blemishes to lacquer, pencil broken neatly in two halves; break does not affect maki-e work. An uncommon maki-e pencil, worthy of restoration. The companion fountain pen was sold in Bonhams June 2013 sale for $8750.
