Footnotes

  • The model for these candelabra was created by Clodion in circa 1780, for a pair of eight-light candelabra that are today in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. OA 5316, 5317).

There are also similarities between the present lot (particularly in the upward extension of the female figure's arm) and a pair of candelabra created by the bronzier François Rémond for Napoleon at Fontainebleau, and which are also in the collections of the Louvre (inv. no. OA 5318, 5319). Known as "les grands faunes," these are also based on a model traditionally attributed to Clodion from circa 1785 (possibly the same model as above).

Similar pairs have been sold at Tajan, Paris, 15 December 1997, lot 157 (FRF 280,000, circa $47,000); and Drouot, Paris, Olivier Coteau-Begarie, 25 May 2011, lot 311 (€21,000).
