Footnotes

  • European émigrés, William Schulz and Emil Fischer arrived in San Francisco separately in 1863. They both worked for Friedrich R. Reichel until his death in 1867 after which they opened their own firm. Schulz and Fischer developed their business to become the main competition to San Francisco's premier silversmith, William Keyser Vanderslice. They acquired instant fame in 1869 by engraving the two gold spikes used in the ceremonial completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The company was renowned for ''..superior engraving, original designs and fine work'' - Silver in the Golden State, the Oakland Museum, 1986, p. 13.
