Reichel until his death in 1867 after which they opened their own firm. They acquired instant fame in 1869 by engraving the two gold spikes used in the ceremonial completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The company was renowned for ''..superior engraving, original designs and fine work'' - Silver in the Golden State, the Oakland Museum, 1986, p. 13.
