Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE
Anon. sale, Chambelland, Giafferi, Doutrebente, 17 December 2000, lot 76.
Acquired at the above sale by the present owner.

Like many of Pierre Bonnard's works, the present lot is an initial sketch for a later project - Le Petit Solfège Illustré, one of the artist's earliest illustrated publications. The book by the composer Claude Terrasse (Bonnard's brother-in-law) illustrates 30 musical compositions for children, and coupled with Bonnard's etherial and playful sketches notes the undertones of motion and an atmosphere of play.
