Intertwined in each others arms, the couple in Les amoureux aux fruits ou Deux têtes is surrounded by bountiful bouquets of spring blooms and sumptuous fruit. Like many of his works, Marc Chagall places himself and his first wife, Bella Rosenfield, as the main characters in this affair echoing their love for one another in numerous other works. Chagall's expert use of color imbued his work with a reverence for life and the subjects he portrayed.
Chagall situates the couple at the lower right corner of the picture. Many art historians believe that this prevalent theme of deep affection was not only a calculated subject matter, but more so an expression of his unconscious, particularly after the artist lost Bella unexpectedly in 1944. Another prevalent motif within Chagall's oeuvre, the seemingly fragrant blossoms and bountiful spread only act to highlight the love and ecstasy of the couple.
As a result of Bella's unexpected passing, Chagall stopped all work for many months, and when he did resume painting his first works were concerned with preserving Bella's memory and the experiences they shared, as seen in this present work. With a career that spanned two World Wars, Chagall sought to preserve his subjects, keeping them safe within the plane of the canvas amidst the turmoil of his external, physical world and his internal psyche. In memorializing Bella through his art, Chagall sought to protect the memory of his beloved for eternity.
