Gen U.S.A."), imperial albumen print portrait, 10 by 13 inches laid down to larger board, 3/4 portrait of Grant in uniform, lacking photographer's imprint, photograph sharp, signature bold, mild creasing to mount at upper and right margin, upper left corner bump, but otherwise a very fine example.
Provenance: Army Medical Museum, c.1864; gift of George A. Otis to Sterling Smith (note accompanying photograph).

RARE SIGNED IMPERIAL ALBUMEN PRINT PORTRAIT OF GRANT. The fragmented letter of provenance accompanying this lot reads: "This picture is from a negative ... in the Army Medical Museum at Washington in 1863-64; from which only a half dozen copies were made, and the negative destroyed. The autograph was affixed by Genl Grant as Lieut General. Presented to me by Dr. George A. Otis ... Curator of the Medical Museum, Surgeon General Office. S.S."
George Alexander Otis [1830-1881] was a surgeon during the Civil War who, in 1864, was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the United States Volunteers as well as the assistant to John Brinton, the curator of the Army Medical Museum. Otis is best remembered as the editor of Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (c.1865).
