The rectangular top with molded edge above a secretary drawer with hinged fall, having a sliding writing surface with ratcheted center above lidded compartments inset with oval medallions and letters of the alphabet, with six small drawers below about the kneehole aperture, on plinth bases, the reverse with faux drawers, top of drawer stamped GILLOWS LANCASTER.

    The offered desk is part of a group of architect's desks by or attributable to Gillows which exist in several different versions. Another very closely related example was purchased from Gillows in 1810 by Sir Walter Scott for his house on Castle Street in Edinburgh.
