Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Collected 1916-18 by Ralph and Anna Sullivan, school teachers in Hooper Bay. The Sullivans acquired a group of Yupik complex masks during their stay in Alaska, now mostly residing in the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta; Alan Backstrom Collection, Seattle, WA

It has been suggested that the three-pronged element atop the head relates to the Eskimo hunting implement known as a seal-scratcher, made from seal claws and designed to attract the prey to a breathing hole.
