Provenance: The Collection of Theodore Strauss and Dorothy Comingore Strauss, Los Angeles, CA; acquired in 1943 in Juneau, Alaska while Mr. Strauss was working on a documentary regarding the Allies' war effort for John Grierson of the Film Board of Canada. Ms. Strauss was a theater and film actress best known for her starring role as Susan Alexander in the film Citizen Kane. Both were considered "storytellers" by their family and took special delight in these masks as links between the everyday world and the fantastic realm of myth and faith.
