1855 $1
An issue that was probably exported in significant quantity, the 1855 is rarer in today's market than even a limited original mintage of 26,000 pieces might imply. An important offering for the specialist, this lightly toned, blue-russet example is essentially problem-free with only one mentionable distraction, a tiny pin prick in the field near star 12. Continuing the trend begun in 1853, the 1855 was intended primarily for use in the United States' export trade. Since most examples that left our nation's borders were undoubtedly melted overseas, one can easily understand why this issue is so elusive throughout the grading scale.
