B-2, R.2. This was not a popular type, at least not among the contemporary public. Banks and bullion depositors did not order too many quarter dollars during the early decades of the U.S. Mint, the delivery for the 1824 and 1825-dated coins amounted to a mere 168,000 pieces. As well, there was little, if any collector interest in these coins at the time of striking, and those Mint State pieces that survived seem to have done so purely by chance. Fortunately for our bidders, the example in the present lot not only avoided circulation, but it acquired a rich endowment of original color from years of having been stored in the same holder. The outward appearance is one of striking antique-golden patina, but direct light calls forth vivid undertones sea-blue and russet colors. The strike is both well centered and quite rather bold for the type, with softness of detail confined to only a few isolated design elements. The satiny surfaces are uncommonly abrasion free, highly unusual for this type. Definitely worthy of serious bidder consideration. (PCGS 5336) Choice Uncirculated to Gem Uncirculated
