Footnotes

  • Larry Holmes was born in Cuthbert Georgia on November 3rd, 1949, and is still considered one of the most brilliant heavyweights in history.

The "Easton Assassin," as he is even better known in the boxing world, left school when young and began working to help support his family. On March 21st, 1973, Holmes decided it was time to turn professional and fought his first bout, winning by Unanimous Decision over Rodell Dupree.

He learned his trade sparing with iconic legends like Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. It was a superlative school of hard knocks, which provided a treasure trove of experience. With an undefeated record, a title shot came against WBC Heavyweight Champion Ken Norton in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 9th, 1978. The fifteenth and final round has gone down in boxing folklore. Both exhausted from a gritty and grueling bout, they brought the crowd to their feet for the full three minutes with a slugfest of thunderous proportions. Neither man would give an inch as both fighter gave every last ounce of effort. The judges decided that Larry had won the fight, for which both will forever be remembered. A pure classic!

The "Easton Assassin" made 16 successful defenses of his title. During his superlative career he fought Muhammad Ali, Ken Norton, Evander Holyfield, Oliver McCall, Mike Tyson, Michael y Leon Spinks, Trevor Berbick, Gerry Cooney and Ernie Shavers.

With his classic long left jab and chilling uppercut, Larry is one of the best boxers of all time. He deservedly entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June, 2008.
