The Happy Valley Racecourse was built in 1845 by British colonialists on marshland and paddy-fields, whose original name is commemorated in the 'Wong-nei-chong Stakes'. The land was drained and river diverted to enable the construction of the course, which lay on the only available flat land. Over time the racecourse became a social hub for Hong Kong's European and Chinese populations.
The first races were originally run with military horses, but later native Chinese ponies ('China ponies') were used, subsequently replaced by Arab horses in the professional era in the 1970's.

The four races won by Mr Midwood for Mr Derick-Hunter between the 23rd and 25th February 1893 were

'The Wong-nei-chong Stakes' half mile, at odds of 11.1, won in 60.75 seconds
'The Compradore's Cup' one mile, at odds of 10.12, won in 2 minutes 13.5 seconds
'The German Cup' one and a quarter miles, at odds of 10.12, won in 2 minutes 44.5 seconds
'The Consolation Stakes' once round, at odds of 10.9, won in 1 minute 55.5 seconds.
