    張大千嚐好山水,不辭千里之苦,壯遊名山大川,對各地山貌瞭如指掌。歷年累月下來,胸中自有丘壑,曾言:「心中有個神仙境界,就可以畫出一個神仙境界」。此畫上題識「人家在仙掌,雲氣欲生衣」出自唐王維句,錄入《全唐詩》。宋蘇東坡評摩詰詩畫「詩中有畫,畫中有詩」。王維此詩意境高遠,甚具畫意,明董其昌亦曾以此詩入畫。大千於此「拈右丞逸詩」,畫來有得心應手之感,遂成本幅詩畫逸品。

    觀乎此幅造境玄妙,韻致出塵。一九六〇年代後,大千筆墨更形寫意恣放,並開創破墨潑彩技法。有說張大千因眼疾困擾或從西方藝術吸取養分,才有此等創新。對此他一概否認,表明此種畫風始於唐王洽,自己只是把被遺忘已久的技法重現於世。本幅〈人家在仙掌〉展現畫家晚年潑彩純熟期的技法和趣味,山體不重皴寫,以大筆暈染而成。色墨交融且層次豐富,墨調中見花青與淺赭,配以留白,拱托出煙嵐雲靄徘徊於山嶺之間。大千再以細筆勾勒近岩,焦墨寫樹,近岸築橋,於墨色流轉處補綴屋宇人家,更顯嵐氣繞山。整體潑寫並施,雖屬畫家晚年作品,但大處淋漓盡致,小處細心經營,題字、鈐印位置講究,無一馬虎。大千自言六十歲以後「以心為師」,此幅山水雖以王維句為題,但境界超脫若此卻是畫家心中「神仙境界」的呈現。
