    Provenance:
    Luc Bouveret, Antiquaire, Paris

Claude-Charles Saunier (1735-1807) came from a family of cabinetmakers working in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris. During his long career he worked in the Transitional, Louis XVI and Directoire styles, and through the marchand-mercier Daguerre, he supplied furniture to the French royal family at Versailles and Choisy. His works are notable for the high quality of the gilt bronze mounts, and the carefully selected veneers that often form an important part of the composition of his furniture, as in the present piece.
