A George III Scottish inlaid mahogany balloon clock
Thomas Reid, Edinburgh, circa 1800

The waisted case with urn finial over two side handles and molded plinth inset with a pair of spirit levels and raised on adjustable brass ball feet, signed circular white enamel dial with Roman chapters and Arabic minute numerals, blued steel arrow hands enclosed by a molded brass hinged bezel, twin chain fusee movement with anchor escapement, spring suspended two part steel rod pendulum with massive brass bob, striking the hour on a bell mounted on the back plate.

  • Thomas Reid (1746-1831) was a celebrated maker whose Treatise on Clock and Watch Making (1826) was reprinted numerous times during the 19th century. He also contributed the article on Horology to the 1816 Edinburgh Encyclopedia. He made precision clocks and devised a zinc/steel compensation pendulum.
