Autograph Endorsement Signed ("A. Lincoln"), 1 p, 8vo, October 15, 1862, expertly repaired at folds, some uneven tanning, folding creases.
A nine-line note penned by Lincoln, to be enclosed with a letter (no longer present) from General McClellan, and forwarded on to the Adjudicant General. Reading, in part: "in regard to Lieut. John. S. Knapp of 17th Regular Infantry, being detached on recruiting service. Adjt. General please fix it up. Mr. Nicolay goes to you with the father, and please hear them as to when the Lieut. is to go." A note in secretarial hand on the same sheet reports that McClellan has "seen Mr. Knapp as requested by his Excellency the President...." John Sullivan Knapp was promoted to First Lieutenant in September of 1862, and spent the winter of 1862-63 on recruiting duty. He was the son of Nathan M. Knapp, a state legislator from Illinois, and a delegate to the 1860 Republican convention that nominated Lincoln for the presidency.
