Main title with engraved historiated border, engraved decorations on section titles, historiated and decorative initials, head and tailpieces. Period calf-backed marbled boards. Cloth chemise and slipcase. Later hand-coloring to several vignettes, including to title and colophon, main title repaired on verso with 2 inch sheet at inner margin, soiling and some short tears at edges of same, some old dampstaining, scattered staining and soiling, a few leaves toned, hinges cracked, boards scuffed and edgeworn.

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. The Faerie Queene is made up of sheets leftover from Lowndes' edition of 1609, with the title replaced by a cancel dated 1611 and serving as a general title for the collection. The title page for the second part of the Faerie Queene and the colophon retain the 1609 date. In the present copy, signature ¶, which usually precedes the Shepherd's Calendar, follows the general title and dedication leaf. Without "Mother Hubberd's Tale," which was inserted into the second issue. Pforzheimer 972; STC (2nd ed) 23083.3.
