COOPER, JAMES FENIMORE. 1789-1851.
Autograph Letter Signed ("J. Fenimore Cooper"), 1 p, 4to, January 22, 1841, Otsego Hall, Cooperstown, New York, in brown ink, to George Roberts, short tear to blank margin repaired at verso, tiny hole with no loss to text, folding creases.
Cooper writes to George Roberts, publisher of the Boston Notion, about the reprinting of his story "Imagination;" declining a writing project apparently put forth by Roberts ("It requires a particular sort of composition ... the desultory digressive manner and my practice of writing is diametrically opposed to it"); offering to send some non-fiction pieces in the future; and mentioning other publishing projects. "Imagination" would appear in the Notion on January 30, 1841, and Roberts would subsequently reprint "Heart," as well. Both stories were originally published in 1823 as Tales for Fifteen, under the pseudonym "Jane Morgan."
