CALDWELL, EDMUND. 1852-1930.
7 pen and ink illustrations on board, 126 x 177 mm, signed with ("E.C.") monogram, 1886, pin holes in margin corners, glue residue in margins, toned near margins, a few stray spots.

A group of seven illustrations created for the Marcus Ward & Co publication Three Little Kittens. The illustrations, which depict anthropomorphic cats, do suggest the work of Louis Wain, although Wain did not publish his cat illustrations until December 1886, likely after these were created. Caldwell was known as an animal painter, and much of his work depicted animals in a natuaralistic manner. Included with the lot is a copy of the book in which the illustrations appeared.
