4to (283 x 209 mm). 6, [2], viii, [12], x, 293, llxiv, [2 ad] pp. Errata, subscriber's list, binder's instructions and advertisement leaf all present. Engraved frontispiece portrait, title, and 53 plates and maps (5 of which are folding and 1 of which is double-page). Period tree calf, morocco lettering piece. Occasional light offsetting and foxing around plates, light foxing and darkening to title, erased ownership inscription to title, folding charts with some closed tears near fold intersections, marginal long repaired tear to "Watts's Shark" plate, removed bookplate, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down.

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF THE VOYAGE TO BOTANY BAY, and the foundation work on Australia as a British colony. At Port Jackson, Phillip founded Sydney, calling the harbor "one of the finest in the world, in which a thousand sail of the line might ride in perfect security." At Botany Bay, he was the last person to see La Pérouse and his crew. More than half the plates are zoological. An appendix lists approximately 800 convicts brought to Australia in 1787.
