HABERMANN, JOHANN (JOHANNES AVENARIUS). 1516-1590.
Sefer ha-shorashim [In Hebrew]; hoc est, Liber radicum seu lexicon ebraicum... Wittemberg: Johannes Crato, 1568.
Folio (320 x 205 mm). )(6 A-3Z6 4A8 (-4A8 blank?). Woodcut printer's device on title, larger version on colophon; woodcut arms of the dedicatee on title verso. Period half blind-stamped pigskin over pasteboards. Scattered worming, catching letters on about 25 leaves, inkstain on 3B3, some toning and marginal dampstain, title and other prelims frayed at edges, binding soiled and board edges well-worn exposing the printed sheets which compose them.
Provenance: several early ownership inscriptions to title, including one dated 1746 of an Erlangen theology student; Sanctae Marieae Buckfastriae (bookplate).

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the most influential Hebrew lexicon by a Protestant. Habermann became a Lutheran in about 1540; his best-known work was the very popular prayer-book The Christian's Companion (in German Christliche Gebett für allerley Not und Stende der gantzen Christenheit, 1567), with weekly prayers written in plain language. No copies appear in the auction records for the past 30 years. Adams A2305 (also without 4A8).
