Footnotes

  • 'In short: these cars combine advanced engineering and safety specifications with traditional Rolls-Royce standards of craftsmanship. In the manner of their performance they are as revolutionary as the Silver Ghost was 59 years ago,' announced Rolls-Royce at the Silver Shadow's launch in 1965.

The foregoing was no mere flight of fancy, for with the introduction of the Silver Shadow, Rolls-Royce brought its body/chassis engineering bang up to date by switching to unitary construction, while retaining all the hallmarks of a traditional hand-crafted product. The Shadow's all-round independent suspension and power-operated four-wheel disc brakes were both 'firsts' for Rolls-Royce, and the new styling appealed to the younger generation of Rolls-Royce owner-drivers more prevalent from the mid-1960s onwards. The existing 6.2-litre V8 continued in the Shadow until the need to maintain power while conforming to US emissions regulations saw it enlarged to 6,750cc in 1970. Notable prior developments had included the adoption of GM400 automatic transmission and air conditioning as standard.
This Silver Shadow is believed to have been exported to Ireland when new.

It subsequently returned to the UK and was registered here as 'ROF 572R' in May 1977, and from then until 1980 was serviced by Ross Bros Ltd of Ilkley (see letter from Ross Bros on file confirming service history). The mileage when first serviced by them in July 1977 was 9,873, and on the final occasion in January 1980 was 35,340. The current odometer reading is 50,171. In January 1980 the Rolls-Royce was purchased by the vendor's company, with ownership transferring to him in 1983. The car was used moderately up to 1997. Although not used for the last 16 years, it has been maintained and driven for MoT testing purposes, and is described as in generally very good condition. It is expected that a fresh MoT will have been obtained by time of sale. Sold only because of the owner's ill health, the car is offered with various invoices, a quantity of expired MoT certificates and old tax discs, SORM and Swansea V5C document.
