1916 Triumph 225cc Junior
Frame no. 258458
Engine no. 2378
One of Triumph's new introductions for 1914 was the Junior, a 225cc two-stroke single. Weighing only 129lb, the Junior featured chain-cum-belt transmission and a two-speed gearbox - the latter being an unusual feature among contemporary lightweights - but there was no clutch and the machine was push-started. Known as the 'Baby' Triumph by the motorcycling public, the Junior resumed production after The Great War and was last catalogued for 1922. Mike Milner-Smyth purchased this Triumph Junior in October 1992, its previous owner being Mr Brian Johnson of Pretoria, who had bought it from Mr Robert Leach in 1989. Mr Leach told Mike he had acquired the Triumph (dismantled) in 1969 from an East London gentleman who had imported it from the UK after WW2. Believed not used since the 1930s, the machine had been partially restored by Mr Leach but not brought to running condition, this being left to Mike (details on file). A 'veteran' of numerous South African classic events, this delightful 'Baby' Triumph is offered with correspondence, assorted photocopied literature, and various rally certificates and entry details. A spare fuel tank and a quantity of spare parts is included in the sale.
