  • First used by Hillman in 1932, the Minx name would continue on the company's medium-sized saloon well into the post-war era. In January 1936 the original 'upright' model was superseded by a heavily revised and more modern looking version. Badged as the 'Minx Magnificent', this larger and heavier newcomer featured a new box-section chassis frame and restyled body offering increased passenger space. In this form the Minx continued in production up to the outbreak of WW2 when it was superseded by a new unitary construction model that would continue post-war, losing its first-gear synchromesh while gaining a restyled front end and opening boot along the way. The pre-war Minx's beam front axle and Bendix brakes were retained and in 1947 carried over to the restyled Phase II, which featured headlamps in the wings, disc wheels and a revised dashboard.

    This relatively rare Phase II drophead coupé was purchased from Bonhams Hendon auction in 2011 (lot 304), the vendor having decided not to embark upon its restoration. Previously purchased circa four years ago by the last owner, who had partially overhauled the engine, extensively rewired the electrics and fitted four new tyres. Described as in generally good mechanical condition, 'ESJ 135' would benefit from further restoration and is sold strictly as viewed. The car is offered with a quantity of expired MoT certificates, Swansea V5 document and current MoT/tax.
