At the end of the disappointing 1988 season, Garelli and Team Pileri went their separate ways. By this time Garelli was in financial difficulty: the plant in Sesto was closed and production concentrated on its factory at Monticello. There was little money available for racing, though the firm was once again represented in the 125cc class, its riders for 1989 being Domenico Brigaglia and Emilio Cuppini. Brigaglia's best placings were 6th in Austria and 7th in Great Britain, while Cuppini managed not a single point from seven starts. This sorry state of affairs effectively signalled the end of Garelli's involvement in Grand Prix racing. In 1991 the factory closed and Daniele Agrati dispersed the racing department's remaining machines among selected private collectors.
The machine offered here represents the final development of Garelli's 125cc Grand Prix racer. It still retains the characteristic aluminium monocoque chassis, the most obvious changes from the immediately preceding version being a deeper centre section and increased bracing at the swinging arm pivot. Note the 'Grand Prix Brno' sticker on the fairing. This actual machine is featured on page 149 of 'Agrati Garelli: 80 anni di storia' by Daniele Agrati and Roberto Patrignani.

A la fin d'une décevante saison 1988, Garelli et Team Pileri se séparèrent. À cette époque, Garelli rencontrait des difficultés financières : l'usine de Sesto fut fermée et la production regroupée à l'usine de Monticello. Peu d'argent restait disponible pour la compétition, mais la firme fut encore présente en catégorie 125 cm3, ses pilotes étant pour 1989 Domenico Brigaglia et Emilio Cuppini. Les meilleurs classements de Brigaglia furent une place de 6e en Autriche et de 7e en Grande-Bretagne, tandis que Cuppini ne récoltait pas un seul point sur sept départs. Ces mauvais résultats marquèrent effectivement la fin de l'engagement de Garelli en Grands Prix. En 1991, l'usine ferma et Daniele Agrati dispersa les machines encore présentes dans le service compétition auprès de collectionneurs privés sélectionnés.
La machine proposée ici représente l'ultime développement de la Garelli 125 cm3 de Grand Prix. Elle a conservé son cadre monocoque en aluminium caractéristique, les différences le plus visibles par rapport à la version précédente étant une partie centrale plus haute et un renforcement du support du pivot du bras oscillant.
