BMW's first post-war twin was the R51/2 based, as its designation suggests, on the pre-war R51. Improvements incorporated included a two-way damped front fork, gearbox main-shaft damper and strengthened frame. In truth, the R51/2 was only a stopgap model to get production under way while BMW worked on something more modern. Its replacement, the R51/3, arrived in February 1951 and despite the similarity in designation had an entirely new and much neater looking engine incorporating a single, gear-driven camshaft and crankshaft-mounted generator among a host of other advances. This motorcycle consists of a 1953 R67/2 frame (identical to the R51/3 type) and an R51/3 engine dating from 1954, which originally formed parts of machines delivered to Algeria and France respectively. (It should be noted that although the VIN plate is stamped '540469', the frame itself is stamped '614238'). The machine is offered with French Carte Grise normale.

La première « twin » d'après-guerre de BMW fut la R51/2 issue, comme sa désignation l'indique, de la R51 d'avant guerre. Ses améliorations s'appelaient amortissement de fourche avant à double effet, amortisseur d'arbre primaire de boîte et cadre renforcé. En fait, la R51/2 ne fut qu'un bouche-trou visant à relancer la production pendant que BMW étudiait un type plus moderne. Sa remplaçante, la R51/3 arriva en février 1951 et, malgré une désignation semblable, elle avait reçu parmi bien d'autres avancées un tout nouveau un moteur d'un dessin bien plus net incorporant un seul arbre à cames entraîné par pignons et une dynamo en bout de vilebrequin. La moto proposée ici comporte un cadre R64/2 de 1953 (identique au type R51/3) et un moteur R51/3 de 1954 en provenance de machines livrées respectivement en Algérie et en France. (On notera que si la plaque d'identification est frappée « 540469 », le cadre lui-même est frappé « 614238 ».) La machine est accompagnée de sa carte grise française normale.
