VéloSolex 49cc Model 2200 Moped c.1963

Developed in the late 1930s, the French VéloSolex first appeared in 1946, just in time to exploit the post-war boom in moped sales. In what many considered an act of Gallic eccentricity, the designers chose not to put the engine in the conventional position in the centre of the frame, but above the front wheel, which the single-cylinder two-stroke motor drove via a roller. The VéloSolex was also assembled in the UK using a combination of British and French components but was nowhere near as successful in Britain where it was subject to the same licensing requirements as a motorcycle. Pressure from rival manufacturers eventually forced the introduction of more conventional models but the original VéloSolex remained an immutable fixture of the range. There are no documents with this Lot.

Étudié à la fin des années 1930, le VéloSolex n'apparut qu'en 1946 à temps pour profiter du boom d'après guerre dont bénéficièrent les ventes de cyclomoteurs. Adoptant une configuration qui parut extravagante, les concepteurs choisirent de ne pas placer le moteur de façon conventionnelle au centre et en bas du cadre, mais au-dessus de la roue avant que le petit monocylindre deux temps entraînait par un galet de friction. Le VéloSolex fut aussi produit au Royaume-Uni à base de composants français et anglais, mais sans avoir en Grande-Bretagne le succès qu'il rencontra partout ailleurs du fait qu'il était assimilé pour la conduite à une moto. Malgré la concurrence redoutable des autres constructeurs de machines plus conventionnelles, le VéloSolex resta fidèle à ses principes. Aucun document n'accompagne ce lot.
