TRENCH, HERBERT (1865-1923, Irish poet)
PORTRAIT BY ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966), photogravure, proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature), head and shoulders, 'Herbert Trench' written in pencil on the mount by Coburn, tipped onto a mount different from the printed version, framed and glazed, size of image 10 x 8 inches (26 x 20 cm), overall size 16 x 13 inches (41 x 35 cm), taken for 'Men of Mark', Hammersmith, 2 January 1910

Coburn wrote of this sitting: 'Mr Trench came to my studio on the river at Hammersmith, where I have spent so many happy days, and where the photogravures in this volume have been printed. Being a modern poet he came to see me on a motor-cycle, and as it was a rainy day there were spots of mud on his collar, and delighted by the chance of getting rid of so much whiteness - for the high starched collar is the despair of the artist-photographer I produced a black silk scarf and made the portrait to my great satisfaction.'

Coburn personally supervised the creation of his photogravures on his own copper plate press.
