HOLMES, OLIVER WENDELL (1809-1904, American poet)
AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF THE WELL-KNOWN LAST STANZA OF HIS POEM 'THE CHAMBERED NAUTILUS', signed ('Oliver Wendell Holmes'), 7 lines, 1 page, oblong octavo, Boston, 30 November 1886

Build thee some stately mansions, O my soul,
As the swift seasons roll!
Leave thy low-vaulted past!
Let each new temple, nobler than the last,
Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast,
Till thou at length art free.
Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea!

This is one of Holmes's best-known stanzas, widely published.
