Footnotes

  • It is likely that this box and cover was made to hold a valuable ring for a wealthy or prominent individual. The combination of different valuable stones and the large loss of jade in the hollowing would have made this an expensive commission. In the late Qing period, workshops in Beijing and Guangdong produced jade vessels inlaid with valuable stones inlaid, but few of this quality. For a similarly decorated jade ruyi example in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, see Deng Shuping(ed.), Art in Quest of Heaven and Truth: Chinese Jades through the Ages, Taipei, 2011, p.155-156, pl.7-5-3.
