A gilt-bronze figure of Amitayus
Early Qing dynasty
Elaborately cast, the regal figure portrayed seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus pedestal, both hands held in dhyanamudra, his meditative face set with downcast eyes and a serene smile, framed by an elaborate foliate diadem, his long pendulous ears suspending elaborate floral earrings and necklaces, beneath hair tied in high chignon and streaks falling loosely at the sides, long tresses falling over his shoulders and draped over with a long billowing scarf, wearing jewelled armbands and bracelets, leaving his chest bare and his lower body clad in a simple dhoti finely incised at the hems.

    Amitayus, or the Buddha of Infinite Light, also known as Amitabha in Sanskrit, is the 'Celestial Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Immortality'. According to scriptures, Amitayus is endowed with infinite merit resulting in good deeds over countless past lives.

    清早期 銅鎏金無量壽佛

    無量壽佛微低頭,面樣祥和典雅,頭戴五葉寶冠,髮髻高聳,兩側曲髮垂落,耳帶大耳檔,上身袒胸,瘦腰,帶纓絡、項圈,肩搭帔帛,質地輕薄飛舞,下身薄裙貼身,上有刻花,富層次感,雙手上下疊放在屈盤的雙腿上作禪定印,坐於仰覆蓮花座上。佛像通體鎏金,造工精細,規整端莊。

    梵語阿彌陀佛原意有壽命無量、光明無量兩種意思,但藏傳佛教卻分別引申為無量壽佛及無量光佛,前者因可保佑長壽,更多為廟堂中拜奉。
